BACKGROUND

Born Henry William Dalgliesh Cavill, Henry lived in the Channel Islands with his parents and three brothers until attending high school in England. It was here that he had his first taste of acting, appearing in his school’s production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. After this, Henry was a regular on the school’s stage, starring in productions such as old favourite Grease. After school, Henry headed for Hollywood, where he landed roles in The Count of Monte Cristo, Red Riding Hood, Stardust and others. But like most guys, he had always dreamt of being a superhero. Having missed out on playing Harry Potter and being too young for James Bond, he finally gets his chance this year, as Superman in Man of Steel.

Sony Xperia Sola

What? Sony calls their flagship Android device ‘the smartphone with a sense of magic’.

So? Mobiles keep getting more complicated. Sola simplifies things with two innovations. Why we love it Those innovations.

First there’s the floating touch navigation system that lets you browse the web by hovering your finger above the 3.7-inch screen. Once the desired link is found, it can be highlighted and a simple tap loads the page. Even more impressive: the two included NFC Xperia Smart Tags. Touching the Sola to a Tag launches a profile that can be pre-configured with up to 10 commands . Out of the box, one Tag is ready for the living room, turning on the phone’s WiFi and launching Google news and weather a pps. The second is set for the bedroom, and turns on Sola’s alarm and switches it to silent mode – as if by magic. Price Dependent on contract Get it @ cellphone stores

JOIN ME

What? It’s a screen sharing tool that, quite literally, gets everyone on the same page, even when they’re not in the same room.

So? By letting up to 250 people see your computer’s desktop at once, the fast and free web-conferencing site is perfect for mass catch-ups.

SHARE

Why we love it: Originally designed for long-distance meetings, with features such as chat, file sharing, internet calling and the ability for anyone to take control of the screen, the system is just as useful for an impromptu brainstorming session or a quick demonstration. Setting up a session involves just a few clicks and no registration, and participants can join in via their smart phone, tablet or the website itself.

PLAY
What? The return of Batman, Robin and the multicoloured building blocks for an even bigger adventure.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita)

So? It’s the sequel to the bestselling Lego video game ever, building on the fun flavour the brand gave Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
Why we love it There’s a new sense of freedom. Thanks to the open-world setup, you can now explore the whole of Gotham City. You’re also no longer restricted to playing as the caped crusader or his sidekick.

So you fight crime as any one of 50 other superheroes (including Superman, Green Lanter n and Wonder Woman), each with their own special superpowers. And, of course, there’s a whole stash of new gadgets, suits and vehicles at your disposal. To the Batmobile! Price R399 (PS Vita, PC), R499 (Xbox, PS3, 3DS, Wii) Get it @ www.Takealot.co.za , Kalahari.com and multimedia stores

A 2GB iPod Shuffle is up for grabs! SMS ‘Lego’ to 43183.

We’re all guilty of at least a few of these crimes against our complexions. But become a reformed skin sinner and your face will thank you for years to come, says Juana Parathyras

1. Spending quality time with a tanning bed

We know it’s winter, and you miss having bronzed skin. But tanning beds arebad for you. Period. End of discussion. Spending just 10 minutes in these skin torture devices is equal to a full day of unprotected sun exposure. Rather than baking on your colour, apply it safely with selftan creams or bronzers.

2. Going to sleep with your make-up on

We’ve all been there – late night, too tired, couldn’t be bothered… But when you don’t remove your make-up before bed, your skin cannot get the oxygen it needs , and therefore can’t repair and heal itself. Also, your pores get clogged with product, providing a cosy environment for breakout-causing bacter ia.

TIP

Skincare is all about routine. Get into good habits – such as washing and moisturising every morning and night – to combat zits and prevent future skin issues.

3. Skipping sunscreen

Incidental sun exposure while walking, playing sport or being outdoors (yes, even during winter) all adds up. This can lead to skin damage, premature ageing and – worst case scenario – cancer. Your best defence? Apply a moisturiser with a built-in SPF of at least 15 daily.

4. Using the wrong products for your skin type

This is a common mistake. Time to start making the right choices: Oily Choose a cleanser with salicylic acid that will combat shine, and an oilfree lotion during the day. Exfoliate once a week with a product formulated to unclog pores and prevent blackheads. Sensitive Wash with a milky cleanser and always choose fragrance-free products.Make sure your sunscreen is formulated for sensitive skin, as it will contain non irritating ingredients that won’t cause redness or nasty breakouts. Combination Choose a foaming cleanser and a light weight moisturiser that promises to hydrate without causing oiliness.

Dry Look for soap-free cleansers that won’t strip away the protective oils your skin needs.

TIP

Don’t wash your face more than twice a day

5. Being a stress bunny

When you’re stressed, your body produces the hormone cortisol. This can trigger bad reactions, such as elevating your blood sugar levels, which causes your cells and oil glands to function abnormally. The simple version? When you get stressed, you’re more likely to suffer from breakouts.Relax

6. Popping pimples

This tempting habit isn’t just gross, it’s also really bad news for your skin. Constantly picking at your pimples spreads bacter ia, causing more zits, and possibly even scarring. Find something else to do with your hands.

7. Not getting enough zzzs

Sleep-deprived is not a good look. Complex, necessary biochemicalprocesses happen in your body while you sleep, and it’s there fore critical to get enough shut-eye. Being tired also plays havoc with your blood pressure, and the poor circulation that occurs as a result can make you look pale and puffy.

Break the habit

When you smoke, your skin doesn’t get all the oxygen it needs. Without enough O² , your skin cells can’t renew themselves, causing a slowdown in the healing of pimples and acne, and premature ageing. Reason enough to quit, we think.

Be phone smart

Your phone is a magnet for germs and dirt.

Think about it: you’re constantly touching it, leaving it on dirty surfaces, andletting it roll around in your bag with all your other junk. Then you press it to your face to answer a call, spreading bacteria to your skin. Yuck. Give your phone a quick clean with ananti-bacterial wipe once a week.

Too Much Too Soon
I’m having a serious problem with dating. When a guy asks me out, I immediately say yes. And when he asks for sex, I say yes … And then he dumps me. What should I do? – Sally*

Sam says: There are some questions you need to ask yourself, like why do you feel you always have to say yes to going out with someone, and what do you feel will happen if you said no to sex? It sounds as if you don’t have firm boundaries. Boundaries are those decisions we make that look after us. They ask the questions: ‘Is this safe?’, ‘Is this good for me?’, ‘Is this what I want?’ We are taught that we should want people to like us and accept us always. I don’t agree with this though, because it means that we will put ourselves in unhealthy situations to please others (many of whom do not have our best interests at heart), regardless of what we want or need. When someone asks you out again, or wants to have sex with you, take a little time to think about what it is you want – and remember that you have the right to say ‘no’.

Feeling Alone
I’m 16 and I’ve never had a boyfriend, but all my friends have. I also have low self-esteem. I know I’m no supermodel, but I think I look fine. I’m shy and attend an all-girls school. Do you think this is why? – Connie*

Sam says: Of everything you’ve mentioned here – low self-esteem, being shy and going to an all-girls school – what I think is most affecting your chances of meeting someone, is that you’re comparing yourself to other people. There is no rule book for a unique life, and you are unique. How you feel about how you look, and your confidence levels, influence the way you interact with people around you. These things do make a difference to how you attract people into your space. But how you look has very little to do with it. Unfortunately, being in an all-girls school doesn’t give you the chance to interact with and learn how to relax around boys. Chill out about where you think you should be, and just enjoy where you are.

Bright future
I’m 18 years old and am currently finishing matric. But I’m really confused about what to study next year. I want to be a fashion designer, but I’m not very good at sketching. Any ideas? – Robert*

Sam says: I’m a big fan of gap years for people who are unsure of what they want to do. A gap year is an opportunity to do an internship or to try out various short courses. There’s no point jumping into something costly like studying a full course, just because you feel like you should. Speak to a career guidance counsellor – they can arrange an aptitude test and introduce you to career and study options. Let’s say you want to do fashion design. You could take short art courses to get your sketching up to scratch, and work on your portfolio. Or you could apply for an internship at a design house. Just remember: a gap year is not a year you spend being a couch potato.

Home security may seem like something best left to the guys, but the Thorne sister s are proving otherwise Kirsty Stacey Terry-Jo

Stacey Thorne is not your average 27-year-old Cape Town girl. She owns and manages her own security company, Thorne Barrier Systems. With the help of her two sisters, Terry-Jo and Kirsty, Stacey sets out every day to make homes in the Mother City safer by installing alarm systems, electric fencing, security gates and burglar bars. It’s not only the fact that Stacey works in a maledominated industr y that makes her notewor thy; she’s also breaking new ground within the field. Stacey was instr umental in bringing InvisiBars, a new, transparent style of burglar bars, to the Western Cape. These innovative security bars do the job as well as standard ones, without making you feel as though you’re imprisoned in your own home.

Stacey and her sisters combined their passion for entrepreneurship with their business knowledge to start their enterprise. She believes that being run by women is what sets Thorne Barrier Systems apart from other security companies out there. ‘We stand out in the crowd, which is an excellent marketing tool,’ she says. ‘It also helps us with our large female client base. Because we are girls, we make them feel more at ease.’

KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY

Stacey loves working with her sisters. ‘We have more fun times than challenging moments,’ she says. When they have a difficult day, it’s due to having too much to do and not enough time to do it. Because of this, sometimes their roles within the company overlap, but they ensure they don’t step on each other’s toes.

BUSINESS-MINDED

Although Stacey believes anyone can start his or her own company, she highly recommends completing a business-related course first, such as accounting or finance. Stacey and her sisters’ backgrounds in social sciences, psychology and design have helped them to market their product. ‘But the best qualification is simply the ability to work hard. You also need to be willing to take risks and be sure of yourself. For all fields of work, you need to have high confidence levels, but being an entrepreneuris particularly draining on your self-esteem,’ says Stacey.

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO EAT HUMBLE PIE

Stacey says it’s importantthat entrepreneurs understandtheir product andthat they are honest abouttheir business. Althoughmaking a profit is essential,Stacey lists humility andsincerity as her top priorities.‘Being too cut-throat can undermine relationships with customers, while being transparent can build them up,’ she says. It’s all about knowing where to draw the line: Thorne Barrier Systems often has clients who have specialised product or installation requests, and Stacey and her sisters do whatever they can to accommodate them. Not doing so can leave their customers unhappy and their business reputation negatively affected.

STACEY’S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

‘Don’t give up in the face of adversity, be prepared to wait for significant returns, listen to positive messages and believe in yourself.’

Life’s more fun with wheels

Stylists Jodi and Nicole get silly

I have some very exciting news! We’ve found a new ClubX guest editor. Without revealing too much, I can tell you that the person is the perfect representative for ClubX. Smart, gorgeous, outspoken… We will be introducing the new guest ed next month!

But, back to this month’s magazine, which is brimming with cool stuff. On the cover we have the gorgeous Lea Michele from the hit TV show Glee. Read all about her rise to fame on page 23. We also go behind the scenes to reveal some of the biggest feuds between Hollywood celebs (page 18), and on page 20 our resident fashionistas give you the low-down on a few fashion no-nos. On a more serious note, we look at emotional abuse on page 52.

Remember, abuse is much more than just physical mistreatment. If you’re being bullied emotionally, it’s time to stand up for yourself. We also investigate the issue of high-school dropouts on page 56.

And, with winter upon us, turn to page 50 to see why you should include fruit in your diet to stay one step ahead of the flu.

Enjoy the magazine!

Name: Eugene Beukes

Age: 48

Title: CEO of Master Retailing

What exactly does your job entail?

I make sure the company is profitable. I also manage the senior executive teams that are in charge of the different divisions, such as sales, marketing and finance.

What do you love most about your job?

Every day is different, with new challenges – it’s great when you conquer them.

What’s your biggest challenge?

Finding skilled employees. This is a problem faced by most retail companies around the world.

What school subjects should someone take if they are interested in retail management?

English and a second South African language would be beneficial – communication is vital in retail. Accounting and basic maths will helpyou understand the financial side of the business. And a computer course would be advisable, if your school offers one.

What qualifications do you need?

I completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Rochville University and a master’s degree in business administration at the Management College of Southern Africa. I have also completed a senior management course and a future business development programme. A course in basic retail management will help you gain valuable knowledge about the retail industry. From there, you can focus on a specific area of retail, such as operations, HR or distribution.

Where can a graduate get work experience?

Under the Skills Development Act, each industry has a Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta), which oversees training and learnerships. Many retail companies employ people who have graduated from these programmes. Master Retailing offers consulting, education and training in the various areas of retail, as well as help with recruitment in the industry. We have partnerships with numerous leading retail businesses. On completing one of our academic courses (see ‘Fact check’), students automatically become members of our alumni. They then get preference for suitable vacancies with our business partners.

Is it easy to find work in retail management in SA?

With the economic crisis in Europe and America, many international retailers are looking to emerging markets like SA. Currently, there are many positions available, because the retail sector is the second largest employment sector locally. Most retailers need skilled individuals with therelevant experience or academic qualification. It’s much easier to getinto the industr y if you’ve studied retail.

Fact check!

Master Retailing offers correspondence courses that are recognised by the International Accreditation Organization, for anyone who is interested in joining the retail industry. Check out www.mretailing.co.za for info on their courses or call 012 751 8417. Master Retailing is offering ClubX subscribers the chance to win a bursary to the value of R9 950 or one of three discounts of R2 000 each, if you enroll in one of their courses. All you need to do is answer the following question:

Who is the CEO of MasterRetailing?

Email your answer, your name and TFG account number to info@mretailing.co.za or fax it to 086 767 2797.
