What exactly is clinical psychology?
As a clinical psychologist, I see clients who are strug-gling with current difficulties or past experiences that still have an impact. These can be traumatic experiences, dysfunctional relationships, breakdowns in relationships or individual difficulties such as anorexia or depression.
What did you study?
I completed a BA in clinical psychology and communi-cations through Unisa and a masters of science in clinical psychology at the Medical University of Southern Africa. Describe a typical day at work. My days are very diverse. I run couples’ communication workshops, lecture third-year as well as honours students in clinical psychology at Varsity College, and also see up to six clients each day for 55-minute sessions.
Is it easy to get into the field?
Finding a position isn’t easy, but various organisations use clinical psychologists or you can go into private practice.
Are there school subjects budding psychologists should take? Maths is important because the principles will assist you when you do statistics and research methodology.
Is the job financially rewarding?
This depends on the number of clients you see as well as your reputation – the more reputable you are, the more people will want to see you.
What traits should a clinical psychologist have?
You should be open-minded, non-judgemental and also a good communicator.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Observing the change in people’s interactions and watching how fulfilling their relationships become. Is there anything you don’t like? Admin! It has to be done throughout the day and it’s time-consuming.
What advice do you have for aspiring clinical psychologists?
Passion is important, as is a good work ethic – clinical psychology requires a lot of studying and hard work. To qualify, you have to do your masters, community service and an ethics exam. It takes about eight years before you can practise.
FACT CHECK
For acceptance into any tertiary institution, matric exemption is required. Most universities offer degrees in psychology so contact an establishment in your area for more information. While admission requirements will differ, maths and English are important subjects to have.
