I was at a party recently and blacked out. I think it’s because I drank a bit too much. It’s happened before and the next day I had no memory of what took place. Is it possible that I have a drinking problem? – Randall*
Sam says: Define ‘drinking problem’. If you mean, are you an alcoholic, probably not (although regular binge drinking is a form of alcohol-ism). If you’re asking if you have a problem with acting responsibly when drinking, then yes, I think so. When you drink enough to black out, you’re basically shutting down memory neurons in your brain. When you pass out, the brain starts slowing down your heart rate and breathing, and can do so to the point of death. Then there’s what happens after you’ve passed out. Who’s looking after your safety when you can’t? Don’t ever underestimate the damage alcohol does (see XIssue on page 48 for more info). If you’re going to drink, do so responsibly and within the limits of what your body can handle. Drinking to the point of blacking out is a serious problem. Doing so regularly is an even bigger one.
