I’m 18 years old and I had an abortion this year. It was my only option really. But I’m feeling guilty about it and I want to tell my mother. I’m scared and don’t know what to do or where to go. – Paula*
Sam says: Feelings of guilt and remorse about abortion are very common. If you didn’t receive helpful and unbiased counselling before and after you went in for the procedure, you may start forgetting the reasons you made the choice in the first place. Perhaps you made this choice based on your age as well as your circum-stances and your financial standing – all valid reasons. Raising a healthy, balanced child is a huge responsibility and is best undertaken in a supportive environment.
It’s important that you make peace with your decision, so speaking to someone about your feelings is a good idea. This could be your mother, but I would encourage you to speak to a counsellor at Famsa first (contact them on 011 975 7106 to find a branch near you). Good luck, and please make a point of using contra-ception such as the Pill or a condom next time.
