I’ve just started going to high school and everything’s going all right, except someone told me the other day that I stink. I think I have BO but I don’t know what to do about it. – Timothy*
Sam says: You’re probably hitting puberty, which means all kinds of weird for your body. Hormonal changes can mean hair growth, spotty skin, deepening voices and, sometimes, serious body odour issues. We all sweat – perspiration is the body’s biological way of cooling down. The smell part of it comes from how your skin bacteria breaks this sweat down. So you can do one of two things – reduce the amount you perspire and treat the bacteria that produce the odour. Wash your under your arms, your groin and feet (where the most sweat glands are) with an antibacterial soap every day. Use antiperspirants (to stop the sweating) or deodorants (to mask the smell) every day. If you feel this still isn’t enough, ask your local chemist for something a little more tough. We all get BO and have to learn how to manage it for the people around us (we’re so used to our own scent that often we can’t even smell it) so don’t take that person’s comment too much to heart.
